Finding your approximate measurements is simple – all you need to do is work out the width and projection that your patio awning will need to be in order to adequately cover your outdoor area.
To get a rough idea of what width your awning will need to be, simply use a tape measure in a horizontal line across the wall, ensuring you’ve covered the whole area that you want the awning to cover. Measure straight across any gutters as if they weren’t there – we can fit your awning in front of them.
Your measurements do not have to be entirely accurate. If you choose to go ahead with your awning installation, our outdoor living experts will arrange to visit the site and take precise measurements. However, it helps to take your measurements as accurately as you possibly can so that we can provide you with an accurate initial quote.
Projection refers to how far your awning will extend away from the wall. It doesn’t take the pitch into account, so is measured as if the tape measure is lying flat along the top of the awning fabric.
The easiest way to measure projection is by measuring from the base of the wall out in a straight line until you reach the point that you want the awning to extend to.
Remember that, in most cases, the projection will need to be at least 0.5m less than the width in order to support the structure effectively. Some of our retractable awnings will be able to support a greater projection, but our team can advise you on this if needed.
As with the width, your measurements do not need to be precise, but it helps if you’re as accurate as possible!
Once you’ve taken your initial measurements, fill out our online form with your contact details and your required width and projection. A member of our friendly team will get back to you to discuss your project and give you a quote based on the measurements you’ve provided.
If you’re happy to proceed, we’ll then arrange a site visit to come and take measurements ourselves. Our experts have installed hundreds of patio awnings all over the UK, so will be able to take precise measurements.
After we’ve taken your awning measurements, it’s time to choose the most suitable option for you.

All of our modern electric awnings are made bespoke to fit your outdoor space, so most of the above options can be adapted to fit any area.
The main thing you’ll want to consider when choosing your awning is the appearance and features of each type, as this can vary slightly between models. However, all of our awnings are made from the highest quality weather-resistant materials and can be fully customised with 200+ fabric options to choose from – so you can’t really go wrong with your decision!
For large outdoor areas, such as those in commercial settings, we do recommend choosing the larger pergola awning to ensure the space is fully covered and the awning has an extra level of stability.
