Awnings FAQ

Do you need planning permission for an awning?

No – awnings do not require planning permission in the majority of cases. However, it might be wise to double-check this with your local authority before installation, just to be safe.

How long does it take to fit an awning?

All of our awnings are fitted within one day to ensure as little disruption as possible.

What is the best type of awning?

Electric retractable awnings are the best type of awning as they give you full control over the function of your space. At just the press of a button, you can extend the awning to shelter yourself from harsh UV rays or retract the awning to soak up some sunshine.

A full cassette awning is also a good choice to ensure your awning can be neatly stored away and fully protected from the elements when not in use.

How many years do awnings last?

A properly maintained awning is likely to last upwards of a decade before the fabric needs replacing. The aluminium frame will last even longer – usually around 20 years.

All Open Space Concepts awnings have a 5-year warranty for your peace of mind.

Should awnings be taken down in winter?

Modern awnings made from strong aluminium and water-resistant acrylic are suitable for year-round use. They can be used even in cold weather conditions without the risk of the mechanism becoming damaged.

However, when the awning is not in use, be sure to fold it away to keep it in the best possible condition and reduce the need for cleaning and maintenance.

Can awnings be left open in the rain?

Although they’re sometimes known as sun canopies, awnings can actually be used in all weather conditions, including rain. However, when rain is very heavy, we recommend folding your awning away. The fabric is water-resistant, but that doesn’t mean it’s 100% waterproof!

How do you clean awnings?

Awnings are easy to clean and do not require much maintenance to keep them in pristine condition. Simply wipe the fabric with a damp cloth and dish soap to remove any dirt and let the fabric dry completely before folding it away.

A pressure washer (or a hose) can also be used if you prefer, but be sure to keep it on a low setting so as not to damage the awning material.

Should I get an awning or a pergola?

Awnings and pergolas are both excellent options for sheltering your outdoor space – however, you might find that one is better suited to your requirements than the other.

Be sure to explore our range of pergolas before making a decision, and get in touch with the team if you need any guidance.
