Create the perfect feng shui garden with these top tips from our home experts and dazzle your guests with a get-together to remember.
To create the perfect outdoor hosting space, it’s important to consider your garden’s feng shui. Using methods dating back 3,000 years, feng shui looks at design and layout to bring about harmony and balance – something that many interior designers and celebrities like Victoria Beckham advocate for.
Getting the feng shui of your garden right can encourage positive social interaction between guests and be the difference between a hit party, or one that’s awkward and forgettable.
In this guide, our outdoor living specialists, along with three feng shui experts, reveal how you can create the perfect ambience by paying attention to the colours, furniture, and layout of your outdoor space.

Feng Shui Garden Ideas: Things to Consider to Create the Perfect Outdoor Space
When it comes to creating an outdoor space that your guests can easily enjoy and relax in, our experts say that considering these feng shui garden elements is a must:
Blending the Indoors and Outdoors
A lot of feng shui garden design involves blending the indoors and outdoors into one so that your guests can enjoy plenty of natural light without having to battle the elements.
According to Open Space Concepts founder Jamie Jones, outdoor living extensions such as glass rooms are perfect hosting spaces for all types of weather – and they’re growing in popularity.
He said: “There’s nothing better than being able to enjoy natural light, especially at a social event. It makes spaces look brighter, more open, and can even boost our moods – all of which can contribute to the success of an event without people realising it.
“Glass rooms for example are a fantastic way to bring the outdoors in, and are useful when the weather isn’t great but you still want a view of the outdoors. There’s nothing like a room that blends both, especially when it comes to cultivating a warm and inviting place for socialising – making a glass pod or extension a happy medium.”
Our team recently installed a new Louvre Pod glass room for a client that has become the destination space among their friends for gatherings in all types of weather.
Sun awnings or pergolas are another fantastic option for creating a cosy feng shui garden space, providing a shaded area where guests can comfortably relax all year round.
Furniture and Lighting
Choosing the right furniture and lighting for your outdoor space is also essential for creating harmony. Feng shui consultant Helen Lickerish advises hosts to “set up areas where people can linger comfortably”.
She said: “You want to create pockets of energy that aren’t moving too fast, and encourage people to sit and chat. To help with this, create U-shaped or L-shaped arrangements of furniture. You can use tables of food and drink to help create these shapes along with plant troughs, garden lanterns and candles in outdoor spaces.”
Another feng shui expert, Vicky Sweetlove, advises that creating light, bright and airy spaces is crucial for feng shui during the daytime, but as night falls, thinking about how you can incorporate soft-focus lighting that draws the eye to different areas of the room is key.
In an outdoor space, there are countless ways that soft lighting can be incorporated to create the perfect feng shui garden ambience. One of our favourite ways to do this is by adding dimmable LED spotlights to your modern awning or glass garden room, ensuring the space stays well-lit but not too bright.
Layout
Bringing the focus back to energy, Helen says that: “Parties need different qualities of energy in different areas. There needs to be both high energy areas for lively chatting and dancing, and softer quieter areas for people to catch up – so create different types of spaces.”
Awnings are great for keeping things cosy and intimate in the evening, providing the perfect space for your guests to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the party. They act as a little roof over your outdoor living space, helping to retain the warmth of candles, firepits, or patio heaters after the sun sets.
According to classically trained feng shui practitioner Zoë Vita James, another important thing to consider when it comes to your feng shui garden layout is ‘sinuous lines’. “Create a path through the space by arranging furniture in a way that takes you on a journey,” she says. Carefully placing floor rugs, for example, can help to zone different spaces in a room and encourage people to walk a certain path through your home and into your outdoor space.
Colours
For a one-stop party colour palette, Helen encourages pops of high-energy shades. She says: “Fiery colours such as oranges, reds and hot pinks can be used in fabrics, crockery, glasses or flowers.”
One easy way to add these pops of colour to your outdoor space is by choosing a colourful awning and matching other pieces of furniture to it, such as cushions or tableware. This helps to create a cohesive look that your guests will love.
At Open Space Concepts, we offer over 250 different fabric options for our contemporary awnings, allowing you to find the perfect feng shui garden style.
Plants
The front of the home is likely to be the first place your guests see. Helen therefore recommends making sure the entrance is attractive and inviting: “Funnel energy in by ensuring the entrance is easily seen and looks welcoming, place lights and colourful plant pots by the front door entrance.”
Finally, for plants in and around the home, Vicky says: “Think about large green and leafy plants. Ideally, banana plants, ferns or bamboo as they need little watering and tend to look after themselves during both the summer and winter months.”
